Elma McClanahan Obituary, Death – Elma Irene “Winkie” McClanahan, born on October 17, 1933, in Roscoe, Missouri, was the sixth child of Clarence Theodore and Gladys (Belisle) McClanahan. Growing up in a large family of twelve siblings, Winkie learned the values of hard work, dedication, and love from an early age. Tragedy struck at the tender age of eleven when her father passed away after a yearlong illness, leaving a profound impact on her upbringing.
Winkie completed her education at Schell City High School, graduating with the Class of 1951. On June 5, 1949, she married (William) Franklin Smith at her family home just outside Schell City, embarking on a lifelong journey of love, partnership, and farming.
A Life of Farming and Community Engagement
Winkie and Franklin dedicated their lives to farming, tending to various livestock and crops in the area. Their farm became a hub of activity, filled with the laughter of their five children and the warmth of their hospitality. Winkie’s talents extended beyond the fields; she was known for her musical prowess, playing the piano at the Schell City Christian Church, where she was a devout member. Additionally, her culinary skills were legendary, with her homemade hot rolls and intricately decorated cakes becoming cherished staples at numerous celebrations.
Engagement with the community was paramount to Winkie. She actively participated in various organizations, including the Belvoir Club, Christian Church Ladies Aid, Modern Mothers Club, and the Schell City High School Alumni Association. Her commitment to service extended to her involvement as a 4-H Project Leader, reflecting her dedication to nurturing the next generation.
