Hughie O’Donnell Obituary, Death – It is with heavy hearts that we received the news of the passing of Hughie Barney, a cherished member of the Braade/Ballina community. Hughie, who spent the majority of his life in Mayo, held Braade and its surrounding townland close to his heart. His journey home, often marked by hitchhiking and walking, was a testament to his deep connection to his roots.

A Man of Tradition and Pride: For Hughie, certain occasions held profound significance. Easter was one such time, as he ensured he was present on the wall in Annagry to witness the Mullachdubh bands march into the chapel. His proudest moments revolved around his community, notably when the Mullachdubh band performed in Ballina for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. His unwavering pride in his people was palpable to all who were present. Hughie’s warmth and kindness extended beyond his immediate family.

A Tribute to Family and Friendship:
Those fortunate enough to be welcomed into his circle experienced firsthand the depth of love and camaraderie among his family and friends. Our condolences go out to Hughie’s family in Ballina, as well as to Barbara, Tony, Danny, and all their families.

A Journey Home: Hughie’s journeys home from Mayo were often accompanied by familiar faces, such as former Donegal manager Tom Conaghan, who would provide him with a lift in a Chathal/May/Roberts delivery van. These rides were more than just a mode of transportation; they were moments of connection and camaraderie that enriched Hughie’s life. In addition to his identity as Hughie Barney, he was also known as Hughie O’Donnell of 34 Roches Terrace, Ballina, Mayo, and formerly of Braade, Kincasslagh, Donegal. Surrounded by his loving family, Hughie peacefully passed away at Mayo University Hospital.
