Tom Urbaniak Obituary, Death – Tom Urbaniak of Sydney, Nova Scotia has sadly passed away. After graduating from Niagara Falls High School, Tom went on to play baseball at Niagara County Community College, where he was the President’s Cup winner. At Brockport State College, he pursued his stellar baseball career while obtaining his Bachelor of Physical Education degree. Later on, Niagara University awarded Tom a master’s degree in education.

Before teaching physical education at Military Road School, where he was awarded the Niagara Wheatfield School District’s 1979 Teacher of the Year award, Tom started his career at the defunct Nash Road School. Later, he became a teacher at Colonial Village School and coached the J.V. Girls Basketball team, which won a championship in Glens Falls under his direction. In addition, he was the JV Boys Football team’s coach.

In summary “Physical education is an integral part of the whole educational process, and through wholesome activities I can help develop a complete child who can come to realize self-worth,” is Tom’s teaching philosophy. Following 33 years of commitment to a town he loved, Mr. Urbaniak retired. In his latter years, Tom was quite proud to teach gym courses at his grandchildren’s elementary school.

As a committee member for the smoking prevention union, Tom prepared EMR children for the Special Olympics at NCCC and the Run for Gold, Jump Rope for Heart, the Hoop Shoot program at the Elks Lodge, and the End of the Year Field Days event within the school district. He was also very involved in many civic organizations and charitable causes. In addition, he oversaw a number of Boy’s Club events and was a Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor.

Tom was a longtime member of Prince of Peace Church, a devout Catholic, and a former lector at the Fatima Shrine. He enjoyed doing yard work and taking care of his gardens. He was a cross-country skier as well. Tom’s family was his first priority in life, and his grandchildren in particular brought him the most pleasure and happiness. Along with his wife of 37 years, Mr. Urbaniak leaves behind his daughter Tara (Greg) Puff, his siblings Teresa “Terri” (S. Carl) Hriczak, Madelyn, Gabrielle, Alexis, and Zachary, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and relatives.
