Having joined Halifax West End on February 16, 1965, Alex had been a member for 59 years at the time of his membership. Although he was a true West Ender and a gentleman in every sense of the word, he served as a council member for a number of years, was elected Club Captain in 1989, and was appointed a life member in 2018. In spite of the fact that he had not been playing golf for a number of years, he continued to take a keen interest in the club and received regular updates from members.
Alex was fortunate to have a large number of notable friends with whom he went out on the course and spent countless hours in the clubhouse. Numerous people, including Chris Ingham and Matthew Godfrey, who had a particularly close relationship with Alex, will miss him. I am unable to list all of the people who will miss him here, but I will mention them here.
A great number of people will always consider Alex to be a member of the Scratch team. Twenty years were spent with him serving as its captain. During his tenure, he would bring a Tupperware box to Scratch team matches that was filled with gammon and mustard baguettes, and in later years, he would bring chicken and leek pies. This would make our rivals green with envy. In addition, the overnight journeys that he took to compete in the Yorkshire team championships became well-known events that were closely associated with him.
During this extremely trying time, we want to let Alex’s wife Pam, son Iain, daughter Alex, and the rest of their family, as well as their close friends, know that we are concerned about them and praying for them.
In honour of Alex, let us remember to treasure the times we spent with him and to continue to uphold the principles of sportsmanship and camaraderie that he exemplified throughout his entire life. Dear friend, may you finally find rest.
