Surrounded by his devoted wife and two daughters, Larry peacefully departed, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to his community.
Early Life and Education: Born on August 31, 1947, in Frederick, Maryland, Larry was the son of Vernon M. Sr. and Mildred Sensenbaugh Cassell. His academic journey began at Middletown High School, where he graduated in 1965. Larry’s pursuit of knowledge led him to Salisbury State College, where he graduated in 1969, leaving an indelible mark as Mr. SSC and class president. He furthered his education, earning a Master’s degree at Shippensburg University in 1972 and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Maryland. He culminated his career at Ballenger Creek Elementary School, leaving an enduring impact on countless students and educators.
A Career in Education: Larry’s passion for education ignited a distinguished career spanning 35 years. He started as a teacher at Urbana Elementary School before assuming roles as Assistant Principal at Thurmont Middle School and Principal at various schools, including Wolfsville, Waverly, and Middletown Middle. In 2003, Larry’s dedication was honored with the Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award.
Community Involvement and Service: Larry’s dedication extended beyond the classroom. He was an active member of the Braddock Heights Optimist Club and received recognition for his outstanding leadership. Moving to Jefferson in 1977, Larry immersed himself in the community, joining the Jefferson Ruritan Club and volunteering at local fire stations. His commitment to service was so profound that he obtained special permission to respond to emergency calls while serving as principal in Wolfsville. Larry’s certification as an EMT further exemplified his devotion to aiding others.
