Following the news of Derek Heinis’s passing this morning, the skateboarding community is in a state of mourning. Derek Heinis was a well-known figure who was known for his incredible board skills and infectious smile. Additionally, the recent interactions that many people had with him serve as a sharp reminder of how ephemeral life is, which adds to the pain that has been caused by this news.

When I first saw Derek perform at the Ahola SA Contest in 2011, I was struck by his remarkable talent. I still recall that feeling very clearly. As a result of his outstanding performance, which will be remembered for generations to come, he triumphed in the competition and won first place. His unflinching intelligence and infectious smile made him a notable presence in every interaction. He was a magnificent presence.

During this terrible time of mourning, we want to let Derek’s friends, family, and especially his brother Brett Heinis know that we are thinking about and praying for them.
